| Sedentary species easily spotted thanks to its striking green plumage and raucous calls. Originally from South America, this "new" city resident has been present since the first individuals were seen in Parc de la Ciutadella in 1975. Its population has not stopped rising and is currently estimated at between 1,200 and 1,700 individuals. Monk parakeets are colonial birds and build huge nests, divided into different chambers, both for breeding and non-breeding pairs. Monks feed on a whole array of plant material.
Easily spotted, especially in the palm trees along Avinguda Diagonal, in Plaça de Tetuan, in Parc de la Ciutadella and other city parks, where small flocks of these green "arrows" shoot past on their way from one tree to another.
