PIED WAGTAIL (Motacilla alba)
Despite being a breeding species in Barcelona, it is seen primarily in winter, when large numbers of birds from colder climes visit the city, fleeing from the cold. The pied wagtail's plumage combines shades of grey with black and white, including its characteristic black bib, which emphasises the colour of the totally white face. True to its name, it nervously wags its long tail up and down. It frequents the areas around the city's ponds in search of insects. It can also be easily seen in parks (on hard sand paths or lawns), on pavements and in just about any square. It nests in holes in walls, buildings, trees and also in disused pipes.
