BLACKBIRD (Turdus merula):
Sedentary species. The male is unmistakable with its jet black plumage and yellow beak. In contrast, the female is brown with a paler mottled chest and a brownish beak. This forest bird is also found in patios with trees -especially if there is also ivy growing on the walls- and in the city's parks and gardens. Blackbirds eat a wide range of food from insects and other small invertebrates to berries, and plant seeds. They build their nests in trees or bushes. At the end of March, with the onset of spring, the males sing high up in trees and on antennas. Their song is powerful, rich, varied and flute-like, and unquestionably embellishes the acoustic landscape of the city.
