| This sedentary species colonised Barcelona in the last quarter of the 20th century, taking advantage of its ability to adapt to all forms of food and the lack of disturbance. It has since nested on the roofs and roof terraces of the city. This is a large gull with a slow, paused flight. Its head, underparts and underwings are white, while its upperwings are silver grey. Juvenile birds, in contrast are brown and do not develop adult plumage until they are four years old. Its beak is robust, yellow-billed and has a characteristic red spot. It is currently abundant on the cliffs of Montjuïc and breeds in the Cathedral, Santa Maria del Mar, Santa Maria del Pi and on roof terraces in the Barcelona Eixample, such as the old building of Barcelona University. |
