Mild winters and sweltering summers

The climate of the city of Barcelona is Mediterranean and humid. Average rainfall is 598 l/m2 in the Plain of Barcelona. Rainfall is not spread evenly through the year, but rather, as is a characteristic of the Mediterranean climate, is concentrated in spring and autumn. The peaks of precipitation in the form of rainfall, hence, fall in the spring and autumn equinoxes, while minimums coincide with the winter and summer solstices. Rains are scarce in summer in terms of frequency, but when they do fall, they come in torrential bursts.

Starlings (Sturnus sp) take advantage of the heat
provided by the city during winter nights

As far as temperatures are concerned, maximums are recorded between July and August, and minimums between January and February. Winters are mild and dry. Summers, in contrast, are hot with high levels of atmospheric humidity.

The combustion of motorised vehicles, heating, cookers and some industries; the low level of heat lost to transpiration and evaporation due to the lack of vegetation cover; and the great deal of heat retained by building materials (tarmac and concrete) mean that the temperature within the city is ostensibly higher inside then outside, with differences of 3º-7ºC.
