The Peregrine Falcon is found in all continents except for Antarctica. It is also absent from large expanses of jungle in Africa and Central and South America, in the Central Asian tundra, and in the heart of the aridest deserts of Africa, Asia and Australia.
The species is divided into 19 subspecies which are primarily distinguished by their colour and size. The subspecies which lives in the Northern Mediterranean and which has been reintroduced in Barcelona is Falco peregrinus brookei. It is characterised by the light reddish hue of its chest. Spanish falconers call it "baharí", from the Arabic literally meaning "marine Peregrine".
