Legal status of the Peregrine

The Peregrine Falcon is now a protected species by the laws of Catalonia, Spain, the European Union and other legal measures at an international level.

INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION
The Peregrine appears in Annex I (species in danger of extinction, whose trade is only authorised under exceptional circumstances) of the Washington Convention, better known as the CITES Convention (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).

It is also covered by Annex II (species which must be object of international agreements) of the Bonn Convention, on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals

EUROPEAN LAW
It appears in Annex II (strictly protected fauna species) of the Bern Convention 82/72/EEC, related to the Conservation of European wildlife and natural habitats.

It also appears in Annex I (species object of special conservation measures) of Directive 79/409/EU related to the Conservation of the Wild Birds.

SPANISH STATE LAW
In the Spanish State it appears in Annex II (species of special interest) of Royal Decree 439/90 which regulates the National Catalogue of Threatened Species.

CATALAN LAW
In Law 3/1988 on the Protection of Animals the species is classified as Category B in Annex II (protected species of autochthonous wildlife in Catalonia).

It is also considered a sensitive species by Decree 148/92, which regulates photographic, scientific and sporting activities which may affect species of wildlife.
